I Still Have Joy – more info

The Guilford Community Church Concert Series presents “I Still Have Joy”, a concert of Peter, Mary Alice and Stefan Amidon’s choral arrangements at the Brattleboro Music Center Auditorium, Monday, June 3, at 7:00 pm.  The one-set 75-minute concert will feature:

40-voice Guilford Community Church Choir
West Willow Octet
Seed in the Ground Children’s Trio
accompanists Rachel Johnson and Cathy Martin

Peter and Mary Alice’s choral arrangements have garnered universal critical acclaim; Mark Simos – Associate Professor of Songwriting at Berklee College of Music writes “Peter’s work is artistry at the highest level: not only a gift to singers in a wide variety of settings, but also a model worthy of study by songwriters and composers in any tradition.

The Amidons’ choral careers started with several American and European tours with Larry Gordon’s “Word of Mouth Chorus” and “Northern Harmony” choruses.  In 1990 Pete Seeger hired the Amidons to create and run a participatory singing stage for Seeger’s Clearwater Festival. Peter’s choral arranging started in earnest when Andy Davis, Tony Barrand and Peter became choir co-leaders of the Guilford Community Church Choir in 1998. The Amidons’ choral arrangements quickly spread from the Guilford Community Church to other area church choirs, and, eventually, to church, hospice and community choirs throughout the world.  In addition to being a co-Director of the Guilford Community Church Choir, Peter is a co-founder and director of the Hallowell Hospice Singers, and he often pulls together impromptu choirs for community events.  Peter and Mary Alice Amidon were the recipients of Brattleboro’s 2023 Unsung Hero award for their work in community singing.

Stefan Amidon went on several Northern Harmony tours with Larry Gordon as a teenager and young adult.  He is a member of the Starry Mountain Singers, West Willow, and various bands including “Zara Bode’s Little Big Band”.  Stefan leads the Brattleboro Music Center Children’s Choir and he has been the principal Guilford Community Church Choir Director since last autumn.  His arrangement of “I Am a Pilgrim” was recently composed for the Guilford Community Church Choir.
