Choral Harmony Singing
The arrangements are absolutely beautiful and the performances are stunning.
-John Feierabend, Former president of the National Organization of Kodaly Educators, and founder of the Feierabend Association for Music Education.
Peter’s work is artistry at the highest level: not only a gift to singers in a wide variety of settings, but also a model worthy of study by songwriters and composers in any tradition.
-Mark Simos, Songwriter; Associate Professor, Songwriting, Berklee College of Music
I ‘ve known shape note singing for 55 years…but I never was part of such a large gang so expertly led.
–Pete Seeger (after attending an Old Songs Sacred Harp sing led by Peter Amidon)
About the Workshops
Peter and Mary Alice Amidon are gifted choral arranger/composers, and dynamic leaders of group harmony singing. The Amidons’ workshops are great for choral directors, who bring home a fresh repertoire of great arrangements of a wide range of traditional American secular and sacred songs, including African American gospel and spirituals, old and new American shape note pieces, newly composed pieces and old hymns. These workshops are great both for choral directors and for folks who simply like to sing. The Amidons’ energy and warmth encourage people to feel relaxed while empowering groups to create rich and soulful harmonies.
Peter and Mary Alice Amidon have been a mainstay of choral singing at major traditional music festivals, choral singing weekends and summer traditional music and dance camps for the last twenty-five years. Peter is a co-choir director and Mary Alice a member of the Guilford (VT) Community Church UCC. Mary Alice is a member of, and Peter is a founder and co-music director of Hallowell, an a cappella SATB hospice choir which has inspired, and helped form, over forty other a cappella SATB hospice choirs throughout the United States. The Amidons’ choral arrangements and compositions, which they have published in their two collections “Fifty-five Anthems for the Small Church Choir” and “Twenty-five Anthems for Interfaith and Community Choirs“, and their Online Choral Store. Many of the Amidon’s choral compositions and arrangements can be heard on their website – www.amidonchoralmusic.com – are being sung by choirs throughout the United States and the UK.
