Free download. You get pdf of the score, mp3 of the recording, and rehearsal track mp3 of each of the four vocal parts. Mary Alice and Peter have always loved the imagery of this old hymn, which was popular in the late 19th/early 20th century. The Amidons first sang the original melody as composed by Jefferson Hascall, but have since realized that most folks are more familiar with the Ralph Stanley version, which is what Peter has arranged here. It is performed by the West Willow Singers.
This beloved 19th-century hymn, originally written by Jefferson Hascall (1860), was revived by Ralph Stanley and popularized through performances by artists like Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, and The Peasall Sisters. Peter Amidon’s SATB a cappella arrangement uses the Ralph Stanley version of the melody, maintaining its Appalachian soul while bringing new harmonic depth.
It’s performed here by the West Willow Singers and has been embraced by hospice choirs and funeral services for its comforting imagery and sweet, flowing harmonies.
