Free download. In Amidons' book 'Fifty-five Anthems for the Small Church Choir'. Mary Alice soloist, sung by the Friends-of-the-Amidons-Singers, Stefan Amidon percussionist. We learned this from Joel Bluestein who learned it from Bessie Jones when she was living with the Bluestein family. When Joel's father, Gene Bluestein, was a professor at California State University, Fresno, Gene invited Bessie, one of the most gifted of all American singers and a storehouse of 19th century African American traditional work songs, playparty songs and spirituals, to the school as an artist-in-residence. You can have one singer learn the solo part and teach the rest of the singers the chorus quickly from music or by ear.
Bessie Jones' music and songs had a profound influence on Peter and Mary Alice Amidon's music making. Here are some more Bessie Jones' songs. Below these examples are the lyrics to "Noah Heist the Window".
LYRICS Noah, Heist the Window African American spiritual CHORUS Noah, heist the window Noah, heist the window Noah, heist the window Heist the window, let the dove come in.
People thought Noah was a foolish man Heist the window let the dove come in Cause he built his ark on high dry land Heist the window let the dove come in.
God told Noah just what to do, Heist the window let the dove come in. Just call in the animals two by two. Heist the window let the dove come in.
God told Noah, "Better leave this place, (Heist the window …) "Gonna rain forty nights and forty days. (Heist the window…)
Noah sent a dove to find dry land... And the dove brought an olive branch to his hand...
God put a rainbow in the sky... Said, "Believe in me and you will never die."...
