This traditional English carol, arranged for SATB a cappella by Peter Amidon, offers a simple but profound setting perfect for Holy Week services. The Amidons learned the song from the late Tony Barrand, who is also the soloist in the included recording. The piece pairs beautifully with the reflective tone of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services. Often, choirs opt to leave off the final Easter verse for somber occasions. Featured in Fifty-five Anthems for the Small Church Choir.
It was on Holy Wednesday, and all in the morning
That Judas betrayed our dear heav’nly King:
And was not this a woeful thing?
And sweet Jesus we’ll call him by name.
It was on Maundy Thursday, and all in the morning,
They plaited a crown of thorns for our heavn’ly King:
And was not this a woeful thing?
And sweet Jesus we’ll call him by name.
It was on Good Friday and all in the morning,
They crucified our Savior and our heavenly King:
And was not this a woeful thing?
And sweet Jesus we’ll call him by name.
It was on Easter Sunday, and all in the morning,
Our Savior arose, our own heavenly King;
The sun and the moon they did both rise with him
And sweet Jesus we’ll call him by name.
